Listening to the talk radio the other night, on my way home, and I heard the term “job locked†for the first time. Have you heard it before?
The discussion revolved around an interview that Nancy Pelosi gave, in which she stated that the new health bill was actually a job creation bill and that it would unleash the entreperuerial spirit of the American worker. She elaborated further by stating that a great number of people were “job locked.â€Â They yearned to pursue their dreams of being a writer or artist or to start one’s own business. What had held, and continued to hold, them back was the lack of health insurance.
That is, they could not afford to quit their jobs and pursue their dreams because they could not afford to go without health insurance. Really. I suppose that could be true for some.Â
Job Locked. I have to wonder, though, how serious can a dream be, if the only obstacle in front of it, the dream, is health insurance. I would hazard a guess and say that for every individual who shied away from their dreams because of a fear of losing one’s health insurance stands an individual who worked every waking hour away from their job pursuing their dream.
What do you think? Do you accept this condition of job locked as an excuse for someone not pursuing their dreams? Are you one of them?Â
I quit my job when my wife was 6 months pregnant with my first child. I wanted to be an independent contractor/salesman. I put my wife on COBRA and took another shot at being my own boss. The last consideration was health insurance. There is a ton of options out there to cover that base.
With all due respects to Nancy Pelosi, my thoughts, as I listened to that program, was that Madame Pelosi must have never ventured forth as an entrepreneur. Please correct me if I am wrong.
Of course, I suppose there are some who dream of being a broke and starving artist or writer. Now, they can quit their jobs and pursue that dream – of being broke and starving. Although, they should probably wait until 2014, or so before they actually quit their job.
In the meantime, if one truly does hold to a dream that intensely, then start sacrificing now and do it every waking hour away from the main job.
