United Parcel Service To Hire 50,000 Temp Workers For Holidays

United Parcel Service Inc. (UPS: 69.15 ,+1.94 ,+2.89%) plans to hire about 50,000 temporary workers for the peak holiday shipping season, about the same number as last year.Norman Black, a UPS spokesman, said the company isn’t making an economic forecast, although he noted in an e-mail exchange Wednesday that “most of the U.S. retail sales projections by others that we’re seeing are pretty flat compared to last year.”Â

In July, UPS executives described U.S. economic improvement as “very sluggish,” albeit ongoing.Â

Black said Wednesday that factors other than the outlook for retail sales go into the company’s peak-season hiring decisions, such as the degree of new technology deployed in various locations that results in more automation.Â

Some of the temporary hiring is slated to begin this month, he said, although most of the temporary jobs will take place between Thanksgiving and Christmas.Â
