I’ve come to see online job boards as a terrible waste of time. Actually, I’ve felt that way for a while now.
Really, posting your resume on Monster.com is no different than going to some mass cattle call masquerading as a job fair. A year or so ago, there was a job fair downtown that featured a 100 plus companies and it attracted over 5000 applicants. The odds are much worse for any given job on at a jobboard like Monster or Careerbuilder – just my opinion.
Don’t get wrong here, there will always be many, many folks that have done or will do well by these things – I just wouldn’t make using these things a main focus.
But, like job fairs – there are job fairs and there are job fairs. I love niche job fairs and you need to actively work the ones that target the industry or occupation you desire.
And like niche job fairs, I think niche jobboards are of a different breed. I’m not talking about applying for a company through their online application, but rather, an industry leading website or a trade association website.
One that comes to mind is FINS.
I think this is a terrific website and if you have not checked it out, please do so. This is sampling of the current openings posted there:

These are quality jobs and targeted. I am guessing that these kinds of posting in trade or industry leading online publications will be a lot more fruitful than the mass variety.
So, if you’re looking for openings in finance, IT, or sales&marketing – FINS would be a good place to start. ExecuNet would be another decent place. Research and dig into it; don’t just take the easy Monster.com way out.
