Example Cover Letter, Project Leader

When developing a cover letter for a system administrator or project management job opening, expect to primarily focus on the broadness and depth of your technical skills rather than on accomplishments. Although technical managers, directors, and executives impact the “numbers sides of things,” it’s likely most systems administrators, helpdesk professionals, and others in tech support roles will struggle to identify achievements for their cover letters.

IT professionals include system installation, configuration techs, field service, field engineers, computer analysts, helpdesk, project management, and tech support. System professionals: programmers, software/system analysts, database designers, applications writers, software/system engineers. Technical support professionals: call center reps, warehousing specialists, IT trainers, technical writers, technical sales/ business development. Web and e-business supporters: graphic and web designers, webmasters, application developers, e-business directors and managers, and online sales and marketing strategists.

Hyo’s Note – Too many “I’s” and too little focus on the reader.  The letter reads nice and is nicely constructed with the writer would be better off with a little less “bragging” and a little more selling.  By selling I mean, the writer needs to focus more on the benefits of hiring her versus the litany of features that she includes about herself.   And this cover letter may be a little too strong.

RE: Project Leader Position

Dear Sir or Madam:

In the last several months, 400,000 employees have been laid off. I am one of those unfortunate souls finding themselves cut after 16 years with the same company.

How do I differ from the other 399,999? I’m a systems engineer and administrator. Not just any SE, but one who has spent the last several years working for a prominent business, learning the ins and outs of the 37th recognized business (Dayton Business Journal) in the Dayton area.

Overview of Skills:
  • Account Management · Infrastructure Project Mgt. · Manufacturing Systems Support
  • Systems Integration · Project Lifecycle · Technological Advancements
  • Operations Concepts/Design Field/User Support · Training Seminars/Presentations
  • Interface Standards/Deployments · Engineering Processes · System Testing / Troubleshooting

Take 16 years of work history, coupled with the depth and magnitude of my hands-on and field experience, and you’ll agree that I am the right candidate for this position. I have handled complex systems, conducting technical and broad analysis, while always complying with user requirements and specifications.

I will contact you within the next several days to confirm receipt of this information and address any questions. You may contact me at (xxx) xxx-xxxx to schedule an interview.

Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,

(Name)
