I’ve always thought that you needed to go fish where the fish were. Sometimes that has gone well for me, and sometimes – meh!
That said, in retrospect; some of my best moves have come when I’ve ventured out beyond my comfort zone. And if you’ve hit a serious roadblock in your job search, then perhaps it’s time for you to get outside your comfort zone.
Have you heard of Guadalupe County, TX?
This is what CNNMoney writes about Guadalupe County, TX:
Towns include: Cibolo, Schertz
Job growth (2010-2012): 12.2%
Business in Guadalupe County is making the earth move, literally. Fortune 500 giant Caterpillar invested $180 million to consolidate and move its engine plant there in 2009, adding 1,465 jobs and prompting other big businesses to take a look. Amazon.com followed with a $166 million distribution center.
Continental Automotive recently added sensor production to its Seguin plant, a $113 million investment that’s creating hundreds of jobs. All this activity is perking up the local housing market and bringing more business to area shops.
To encourage even more moving around, a 41-mile extension of State Highway 130 — which stretches from Seguin to Georgetown — was completed last year. The 85-mile-per-hour toll road helps distributors bypass costly congestion, and shortens the trip to the San Antonio or Austin airports to a mere 45-minute drive.
12.2% job growth – WOW!
Am I suggesting you move to Guadalupe County, TX?
That’s up to you and your family. But what I do suggest is that you broaden the horizons of your search.
Instead of applying and reacting to whatever is in the job market, take a page from Richard Bolles’ What Color Is Your Parachute? 2014: A Practical Manual for Job-Hunters and Career-Changers, and decide what you want to do and where you want to do it and what you want to be paid for doing it where you want to do it first – Whew, that’s a lot of “w’s.”
That means research.
A few days ago, CNNMoney came out with a great article, “Best Places for Job Growth.” The slideshow style articles tend to irritate me a bit but this is a very informative article.
Did you know that nearly 600 international businesses call Gwinett (County, GA) home?
Lot of fish, there…

Glassdoor.com has this list that is interesting to look. It’s their “Top 25 Companies for Work-Life Balance.”
Interesting AOL is on there. You know – AOL – where the CEO fired a Patch employee on spot, in front of a 1000 co-workers (former, now) for tape recording the presentation.
