Vince Lombardi had a great understanding of how teach, coach, and motivate people in general, not just football players. His thoughts on winning, success, commitment, and the like has always been a great source inspiration for me.Â
I wanted to talk a bit about some of his quotes on discipline. Not to put too fine a point on it, but without discipline, bordering on iron like habit; finding a job after a long period of unemployment will be near to impossible.
“I’ve never known a man worth his salt who, in the long run, deep down in his heart, didn’t appreciate the grind, the discipline. “
“There is something good in men that really yearn for discipline.â€
“Mental toughness is many things and rather difficult to explain. Its qualities are sacrifice and self-denial. Also, most importantly, it is combined with a perfectly disciplined will that refuses to give in. It’s a state of mind – you could call it character in action.â€
“The good Lord gave you a body that can stand most anything. It’s your mind you have to convince.â€
“Once you learn to quit, it becomes a habit.â€
“Perfection is not attainable. But if we chase perfection, we can catch excellence.â€
“Once you have established the goals you want and the price you’re willing to pay, you can ignore the minor hurts, the opponent’s pressure and the temporary failures.â€
At its most basic, discipline is commitment in action. If you commit to attending 2 networking events a week and making a new contact everyday, it is the level of discipline you possess that will determine if you truly follow through or not.Â
Meeting new people, learning new skills, sending out more resumes, and everything else you do can become a day to day grind, unless you have the discipline to keep yourself strong. Discipline gives backbone to your commitment. Your commitment gives you reason for what you do. And keeps you strong.
Good Luck
